Gang of youths beat swan to death in shocking act of cruelty

A group of children has sparked widespread outrage after a swan was brutally attacked and later died from its injuries in what has been described as a deliberate act of animal cruelty.

The incident took place at Canoe Lake in Southsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire, where several swans are known to live. Shocked witnesses reported that the children first threw stones and sticks at the bird before physically attacking it by repeatedly kicking and stamping on the defenceless swan.

The severely injured female swan was rushed to a veterinarian, but despite efforts to save her, she died the following day.

Animal welfare charity Swan Support, which responded to the scene, expressed deep sadness over the incident.

“We received a deeply distressing call about the deliberate abuse of one of the lake’s swans. Witnesses reported that a group of children threw stones and sticks at the bird before repeatedly kicking and stamping on her,” the organisation said in a statement.

According to reports, an adult was also nearby during the attack but left the area when witnesses attempted to intervene. Some of the children’s parents were reportedly on the opposite side of the park at the time.

Swan Support described the incident as both heartbreaking and deeply concerning.

“We are devastated by what this swan was forced to endure. The fear and pain she must have experienced during such a senseless and unprovoked attack are difficult to imagine. It is especially worrying when incidents like this involve children. This is not only about animal welfare—it is also about empathy, compassion, and the values we pass on to the next generation.”

After the swan died, the charity shared an emotional tribute:

“It is with heavy hearts that we must tell you she did not survive. We did everything we could, but it wasn’t enough. You deserved a kinder world. Rest in peace, beautiful friend.”

The attack has triggered widespread public anger and renewed calls for greater education about animal welfare, respect for wildlife, and children’s behaviour.

Hampshire Police confirmed that an investigation is underway. According to the force, two children have been reported in connection with the attack, which took place at Canoe Lake at around 9 p.m. The investigation remains ongoing.
